The blog is now focused on curating book lists, book reviews, readalikes, author interviews, and other kidlit related resources. I adore graphic novels and audiobooks and believe that they count as reading too. However, I also love picture books and chapter books. In 2021, Afoma Umesi, the website became Reading Middle Grade! You’ll find that I read mostly middle-grade and young adult novels. It began as an online diary - as all blogs were, circa 2012 - and became fertile soil for my writing skills to bloom. In addition to my love affair with words, I dabble in photography, love to travel, and also happen to have completed medical school.Īfoma Umesi, the website, has evolved over the years. I’m a twenty-something writer, editor, and voracious reader with an insatiable appetite for children’s literature, books by women, and articles about life and human relationships. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.Īll Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy. Sand is disoriented and alone, and Haskell captures that perfectly, transferring Sand’s anxiety and his slow realization that he’s stuck there and no one is coming to get him to the reader. With no clue how he got there or how he will get out.Ī brief aside here: we discover things right along with Sand, and while that generally annoys me, in this book it works to great effect. Then Sand, who has been arguing with his father about attending university (he doesn’t want to), throws a token in Saint Melor’s wishing well, and ends up inside the castle. No one has gone to see what could be seen inside. (Well, it’s in one of those offshoots just when France was becoming, well, France.) The duchy castle has been in disrepair for longer than Sand’s 13 years, and surrounded by thorns. Sand, short for Alexandre, is the son of the local smithy in a small French duchy. It’s in the midde grade (grades 3-5) section of the bookstore. Support your local independent bookstore: buy it there!Ĭontent: There’s death and betrayal and politics, and lots of funny French names, so maybe it’s not for the most reluctant of readers. First sentence: “Sand woke, curled in the ashes of a great fireplace.” With Genevieve away Aaron grows closer to his friends especially Thomas. Seeing Aaron’s life with his friends and Genevieve is great although Genevieve will be leaving for an art camp which Aaron isn’t keen about but he doesn’t want to hold her back which is very sweet.Īs we approach the 1/4 mark in the novel we see the inner workings of Aaron’s mind and how insecure he is about everything in his life especially Genevieve although I did love the scene where they both say I love you in their own unique ways on Genevieve’s birthday after which she will be leaving for art camp. I also liked the way Silvera looks at ten relationships and virginity as it is very realistic. One thing they have in common is they are both artistic but Aaron is quite poor and gets embarrassed when Genevieve has to pay for things. Despite having a messed up life Aaron does have a little happiness in his girlfriend Genevieve. We also learn about the Leteo Institute which can alter or remove unwanted memories. We meet Aaron Soto whose home life is terrible his father committed suicide, his mother is emotional withdrawn and he himself attempted suicide. Review: The opening to more happy than not was actually really sad for an opening chapter. She was killed while traveling in the western United States with Brian Laundrie, her fiancé. The Petitos sued the Laundries for emotional distress in connection with Petito’s death. The letter was the subject of arguments in a Sarasota County, Florida, courtroom on Wednesday, with attorneys wrangling about the note’s relevance to the lawsuit brought by Petito’s parents against Laundrie’s parents and the Laundries’ former attorney. Where’s the indictment?’ But I think if there’s other evidence showing that there was some genuine effort by one of the parents or both of the parents to help him evade the law or to help him obstruct justice … this letter would absolutely be an exhibit in that case.”Īnd the letter could be useful to the Petitos in the civil trial, according to Honig. He added, “You can’t just point at that letter and go, ‘Smoking gun. “But the letter could be useful evidence in the bigger picture towards building a case potentially for obstruction or accessory after the fact.” “No prosecutor would bring criminal charges based solely on this letter,” said Honig, a former federal and state prosecutor. Read the letter found in Brian Laundrie's backpack from his mom marked 'burn after reading' Pictures of Gabby Petito and her boyfriend/fiance Brian Laundrie before her disappearance from gabspetito/Instagram After reading this book, I have a stronger interest in going to Florence and hunting down some of these spots, as well as, of course, its many other famous sites. In fact, we were supposed to travel to Rome in March 2020 but had to cancel that trip due to the emergence of COVID-19. I have not personally visited Florence or Italy for that matter. Several sites described in the book can be visited in today’s Florence, including San Jacopo di Ripoli, Vespasiano da Bisticci’s barely marked tomb in Santa Croce, and Vespasiano’s bookshop, which is now a pizza restaurant. Of course Florence and Italy were not an island and the broader matters of the day described in this book go well beyond its borders. The politics, religion, and social concerns of what we know of today as Italy (but at the time was comprised of separate city-states) run in strands throughout the book as well. Renaissance Florence is brought to life through descriptions of the bookseller’s shop and surrounds. The point of view of each chapter in the story is a limited perspective of a range of characters growing from nine in the first novel, to 31 characters by the fifth novel. A seventh novel, A Dream of Spring, is planned.Ī Song of Ice and Fire takes place on the fictional continents Westeros and Essos. He is currently writing the sixth novel, The Winds of Winter. The fifth and most recent volume of the series, A Dance with Dragons, was published in 2011, six years after the publication of the preceding book, A Feast for Crows. Martin, who initially envisioned the series as a trilogy, has published five out of a planned seven volumes. He began the first volume of the series, A Game of Thrones, in 1991, and it was published in 1996. A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels by the American novelist and screenwriter George R. Though she has no wealth, she trades her stories like currency with people who are kind to her. Eva is a naturally gifted and imaginative storyteller who meets people from all stations and walks of life. “A remarkable novel” ( The Washington Post) from New York Times best-selling author Isabel Allende introducing her most enchanting creation, Eva Luna: a lover, a writer, a revolutionary, and above all, a storyteller - available for the first time in audiobook.Įva Luna is the daughter of a professor’s assistant and a snakebitten gardener - born poor, orphaned at an early age, and working as a servant. In addition to tracking worksheets, you’ll need to build a hierarchy of data storage for your book, including top-level folders for legal (your contract and any other matters, including the rights to use figures owned by others) and the many versions of the manuscript files, figures and research. You’ll have hundreds of separate elements to track without a tracking tool, you’ll soon lose control of your project and it will show. Your book will have dozens to over 100 figures, including line drawings, photographs and images you obtain from other sources. In the writing process, you’ll have your first draft chapters and one to three versions of each chapter as you work through the editing process. In a typical full-length technical book, you’ll have between 15 to 30 chapter files and other elements, including front matter, glossary and references. You don’t want to grind out 500 pages only to find out you did the formatting all wrong. If you’re a first-time author (or are working with a new publisher), the publisher will probably ask for a sample chapter early on to ensure you are building your materials properly. |
